ABOUT

The Foundation was created on January 3, 2005 as an entity designed to promote research and education in the growing medical area of Focused Ultrasound applied to medicine.  Planned activities are to organize and assist with meetings, symposia, and discussions related to focused ultrasound.  The Association will also work to promote collaborations between research and clinical groups through written and oral communication.  It will strive to assist and educate students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels on research topics related to therapeutic and diagnostic focused ultrasound.

As dictated by the Bylaws of the Association, specific activities will be planned by an Organizing Committee formed by professionals and interested persons.  Presently two committees have been formed and are actively meeting: (i) The Foundation Committee that has been set up to establish the initial infrastructure of the Association and (ii) The Organizing Committee for assisting the Fifth International Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound.  Other planned, but not yet established organization committees for 2005 include a committee to organize a colloquium series for of individual speakers to present their research in a forum open and free to all interested persons and a committee on education which will plan and enact activities that will benefit students.

2005 Committees
ISTU 2005: The Foundation's primary activity in 2005 involved the organization of the 5th International Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound, held at Harvard Medical School from 27-29 October. Under the direction of conference Chair Kullervo Hynynen, the symposium was the largest meeting in history dedicated completely to therapeutic aspects of ultrasound, having nearly 450 participants from 18 countries.

As a service to this topical symposium, the Foundation performed a large percentage of logistical operations, including financial management, marketing, web design and hosting, registration, abstract submission services, abstract distribution, email hosting, presentation uploading, proceeding uploads, credit card and other payment transactions, invoicing, and corporate liaison work. These servics were all provided without cost to the participating societies.
